The sense of the context and the scale is essential for architectural restoration. Recovering the real environment of the sites to be restored puts tremendous burdens on financial and human resources of a restoration project. Yet, a realistic rebuild is crucial in exploring design ideas, propositions, identifications, and verifications of an architectural restoration project.

In the ‘old’ days, the artificial CG models are manually created to simulate the site status. They are expensive, but low in quality, as they lack in visual realism and in dimensional accuracy. In our ‘new’ age of camera drones, Altizure helps the architects to recover the restoration site into true realistic 3D models in the three simple steps (learn more). Fangyu, a company specialized in architectural restoration, first tried a couple of pilot projects on Altizure, then has started to apply Altizure technology in their entire design process.

In one of Fangyu’s projects, they are restoring two old fortresses in Zhongshan, a city in south of China. They went to the site and spend a few hours in the morning to capture the photos with a quadropter, Phantom 3 Professional by DJI. For this specific project, they did not use the Altizure APP for capturing, instead, they manually controlled the drone, flying very low to be closer to the fortresses, and avoiding the dense vegetation in the surrrounding of the fortresses. In total, they took 1018 images, at 12 gigapixels resolution. And it took Altizure about 10 hours for Fangyu to get the 3D models.

The reconstructed 3D models are full of realistic textures and detailed geometries as the photos have been shot quite close to the fortresses. Fangyu later downloaded OBJ files to import them into 3Ds Max to finish the whole rendering process for their clients.

The Altizure workflow is simple and the Altizure online UI is intuitive. We can pick it up even if we know nothing about the magic behind the 3D reconstruction at the first time. All we need is to focus on our design with the help of the realistic 3D models.
